Working Principle
When the engine is started and cold, the thermostat closes the passage to the radiator, causing the coolant to circulate within the engine to accelerate warm-up. Once the optimal operating temperature is reached, the thermostat gradually opens, allowing coolant to flow through the radiator for cooling to maintain a constant engine operating temperature.

Features of Cummins Wax-type Thermostat:

∎ Unaffected by Coolant Level in Engine System
In a wax-type thermostat, the thermally actuated element—the sensor—possesses sufficient rigidity and strength. The valve lift is not affected by the coolant level within the cooling system and responds solely to changes in coolant temperature. As diesel engine development has led to increasingly higher cooling system pressures, this advantage becomes particularly significant, surpassing what is achievable with bellows-type thermostats.

∎ Low Flow Resistance
In the wax-type thermostat, the sensor dimensions are much smaller than those of a bellows, resulting in lower coolant flow resistance.

∎ Long Service Life
The structural design of the wax-type thermostat features a robust sensing element with high mechanical strength, contributing to a long service life.
